Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI are pursued at its four Research Centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC) and the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center (CARE-C). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

CyI invites applications for the position of the Director of the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C). CARE-C is one of the four, and the most recent, Research Centres of the CyI. It has been established in the framework of the EU H2020 Teaming project “EMME-CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre), in cooperation with the EU Advanced Partners Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (Germany), University of Helsinki (Finland) and the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (France), with the ambition to serve as a Centre of Excellence in Climate and Atmospheric research for the entire EMME region.

The Director of CARE-C will be responsible for leading, planning, strategy implementation, and management of the operations of CARE-C. CARE-C is autonomous in terms of its research and internal functions, while also a constituent Center of the CyI. The Director of CARE-C is a member of the CARE-C Management Board as well as the CyI senior leadership team and attends the President’s Management Council and the CyI Academic Committee. The successful candidate will, among other responsibilities, promote the overall scientific excellence and reputation of the CARE-C and the CyI in the EMME region, Europe and worldwide, ensure appropriate mentoring and training of young scientists to become international leaders in the scientific areas of the Centre, develop new regional and international partnerships (academic as well as from the public and private sectors), and promote innovation and entrepreneurship and support end-user needs towards achieving a green and sustainable future.

The selected candidate will lead an international team of over 90 research and technical staff, within a highly attractive working environment where English is the required working language for both research and administration. S/he will work in Cyprus, and will be offered a Professorship appointment with an internationally attractive salary and benefits package, commensurate to his/her high degree of responsibility and qualifications.

 

Primary Responsibilities

The Director will be directly responsible for:

  • Planning, development and implemention of the research agenda of the Center
  • Defining the research, innovation, financial and educational strategy of the Center
  • Recruiting the Center’s research and technical staff, and generally managing, developing appraising and motivating the staff members of the Center to carry out and achieve the center’s objectives
  • Developing and overseeing the Center’s financial budgets
  • Developing and improving the research and laboratory facilities of the Center
  • Collaborating closely with the CyI central administration and leadership for the continuous development of the Centre, and for representing CARE-C at senior management level within CyI
  • Raising financial and other resources to support the research agenda and development of the Centre
  • Undertaking a senior leadership role at the CyI and representing and promoting both CARE-C and the CyI internally, nationally, regionally and internationally

 

Other responsibilities as a Professor at the CyI

  • Mentoring, educating, training and providing overall scientific guidance to graduate students in CyI's Doctoral and Master’s programs
  • Developing and delivering relevant seminars and courses for CyI's Doctoral and Master’s programs
  • Initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research and higher education institutions that conduct scientific research in areas related to the Centre’s and his/her expertise
  • Communicating the results and implications of research conducted at CARE-C and the CyI at all levels, including the academic community, the public at large and political and economic decision makers.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in relevant to CARE-C’s research activities/field
  • Sustained scientific track record of the highest international level
  • Coordination of large-scale international research projects
  • Minimum of 10-years experience in research and demonstrated high-level achievement and/or higher education senior management
  • Strong leadership qualities, able to build teams, calm under pressure
  • A strong vision of the role of research relevant to the CARE-C scope of interest and research domains
  • Excellent managerial, interpersonal and leadership skills, with strong capacities for managing human resources, and for generating and maintaining contacts in the academic, business and governmental circles, as well as obtaining support from them for the Center
  • Excellent approach to problem solving, analytical and conflict resolution capabilities as well as demonstrated record of initiative
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
