Job Description

The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL; of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) has recently developed in the framework of the “Autonomous Flying Platforms for Atmospheric and Earth Surface Observation” Project (APAESO). The facility operates various sizes of fixed and rotary wing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs), a mobile Ground Control Station and a fully equipped laboratory and workshop dedicated to Unmanned Systems and their applications. USRL is currently involved in various field of research, including atmospheric sciences, environmental surveillance, and photogrammetry (for 3D reconstruction of terrain and constructions). 


Due to the increasing growth and demand in aircraft manufacturing and flying operations mostly related to atmospheric research EU projects, the Cyprus Institute is seeking for an experienced electronic engineer to join the USRL team, who will be responsible for the design, development, integration and troubleshooting of the various electronic systems on-board the UASs. The successful candidate will work under the USRL manager and CARE-C Director.


This position is supported by the EU H2020 project “EMME-CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre; TEAMING Grant no. 856612), within which the Cyprus Institute is establishing a “Centre of Excellence” in Climate and Atmosphere research for the EMME region in cooperation with EU Advanced Partners (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany; University of Helsinki in Finland; and CEA in France).




The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities:

  1. Assisting in the Integration of UAS electronic systems (autopilot, communication, telemetry etc.).
  2. Participating in the Development of prototype electronic systems to support mission-specific capabilities.
  3. Participating in the Development of prototype Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) for UAS sensors
  4. Assisting in the Integration of commercial and prototype atmospheric sensors in UASs.
  5. Contributing in the assessment, diagnosis and troubleshooting of UAS technical issues.
  6. Contributing in the overall development of the UAS (Platform and Ground Control Station).
  7. Participation in scheduled flights for the purpose of the development and optimization of the platforms and the avionic/navigation systems.
  8. Participation in intensive research campaigns for atmospheric monitoring (in Cyprus and abroad).
  9. Remain updated on UAV hardware and associated technology and makes appropriate recommendations to the team leader.
  10. Participation in local and international conferences/workshops related to UAS technology
  11. Ensure compliance with service guidance, Institute’s policy and procedures, and Civil Aviation Authority (DCA) regulations.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and project planning skills
  • Experience in the design of PCBs
  • Hands-on experience with electronic circuits
  • Basic Programming Skills
  • Excellent knowledge English language both verbal and written.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills


Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in various avionics systems such as autopilots, airborne sensors, and communication systems
  • Experience with Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) (hardware and software-wise)
  • Technical knowledge related to advanced drone technologies, including LiDAR, GNSS, IMU, microelectronics, embedded systems, multi-axis gimbals, imaging sensors, electromagnetic interference, and Linux-based OS
  • Experience in UAV Flight operations
  • Theoretical and/or hands-on experience with Radio Frequency (RF) systems
  • Fixed-wing/ multicopter piloting skills
  • Working knowledge of aircraft design, flight mechanics, and aircraft stability and control.
  • Utilization of reliable wireless communication links for long range UAS flights
  • Programming in C, C++, Python
