Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

CyI is working closely with the government of the Republic of Cyprus for the implementation of Cyprus Climate Change Initiative (CCI), which constitutes a regional and international initiative to coordinate the efforts of the EMME region to adhere to the Paris Agreement and to ameliorate Climate Change and its impacts. The CCI is scientifically supported by the Cyprus Institute, which through a number of task forces will compile regionally-oriented scientific knowledge of Climate Change impacts aiming to better integrate national/regional policies within the EU framework.

Furthermore, through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Teaming programme, CyI has secured funding for establishing a unique center dedicated to Climate and Atmosphere Research in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME – CARE).

The Scientific Coordinator will be supporting the implementation of CCI and related actions of EMME-CARE.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the management and administration of the above-mentioned activities, under the direct supervision of the coordinator of Cyprus Institute’s CCI.


The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities

  • Coordinating/liaising between the different bodies involved in the organization of the CCI Task Forces (National Organizing Committee; International Policy Advisory Boards; Workshop conveners; etc.) by organizing and participating in meetings, taking follow-up actions & tasks, facilitating communication among stakeholders.
  • Organizing and managing a series of workshops, while providing technical support to the conveners, including preparing invitations to experts, drafting agendas and programmes, keeping minutes of the workshops, and preparing follow-up synthesis documents.
  • Managing and providing logistical support to the CCI Task Forces including: preparing budgets, travel-transfer-accommodation organization of the Experts, etc. and engaging with the appropriate CyI units to achieve it.
  • Proving management support for the organization of the International Climate Change Conference 2020, including: tender procedures, invited guests, programme, media, dissemination, sponsoring, logistics.
  • Monitoring financial issues including spending plans and liaising with CyI Accounts colleagues and the project partners.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • MSc in a relevant field such as in Sustainable Development, Environmental Sciences, Renewable Energies and Climate Change, atmospheric Chemistry or Physics etc
  • Ability to author and edit reports of academic and policy nature
  • Five years of relevant experience
  • Previous experience in research/academic institution in a related field will be considered an advantage
  • Excellent knowledge of MS office and internet IT tool
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills to adapt to a multicultural/multidisciplinary environment
  • High level organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • High degree of numeracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to work to multiple and tight deadlines
  • Excellent knowledge and command of the English language and Greek language both verbally and in writing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of other languages of the region will be considered as an advantage
