The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research, innovation, and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The Cyprus Institute is currently seeking to recruit an Associate Research Scientist to contribute to the development of the Infectious Diseases and Public Health research programme which will be conducted by the Institute. In this role, the successful candidate will work with a team of investigators, researchers and students in establishing a robust experimental, research programme that deals primarily with the spread of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) and their interaction with the environment. They will be contributing to establishing the required laboratory, insectary and other experimental facilities, and to drafting proposals for funding. They will also be involved with planning, performing and supervising research related to the biology, physiology and control of insect vectors, primarily mosquitoes that vector medically relevant arboviruses, and perform and supervise experiments related to the interactions between these vectors and their pathogens.

The research requires field work, mostly vector surveillance and identification, and thus relevant experience is essential. Other areas that the work entails and require relevant experience include rearing and handling of vector species under insectary conditions, experimental manipulation of mosquitoes in laboratory settings, application of molecular techniques to study the biology and physiology of mosquito vectors and evaluation and improvement of vector control strategies.


Main Responsibilities:

  • To contribute in establishing a research laboratory and other facilities related to the study of vector-borne diseases
  • To perform experiments and to produce and analyse high quality data
  • To identify and develop techniques, models and methods for the collection and analysis of data
  • To take initiatives in the planning of research and appropriate experiments
  • To maintain accurate and complete records of all experiments and findings
  • To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times
  • To present findings to colleagues and at conferences
  • To contribute to writing bids for research grants
  • To draft publications and prepare them for submission to scientific journals
  • To write internal reports and reports for submission to research sponsors
  • To undertake instruction and supervision of the work graduate students and research assistants
  • To participate in duties associated with support of the research group
  • To promote the reputation of the research group, the Centre and the Institute

Other Responsibilities:

  • To undertake appropriate administration tasks related to the operations of the research group and the Centre
  • To assist group members with data analysis
  • To undertake limited teaching and practical instruction duties
  • To attend relevant meetings
  • To comply with relevant Institute policies
  • To undertake any necessary training and/or development
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post as directed by the line manager
Job Requirements

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • PhD in Biology or a related scientific discipline
  • Strong publication track record
  • Experience in carrying out presentations in international conferences
  • Proven record of contribution to the drafting of successful research proposals
  • Teaching and student training experience
  • 4 years of postdoctoral experience
  • Experience with a wide range of molecular, biochemical and cell biology techniques
  • Vector biology knowledge
  • Practical experience with mosquito rearing and manipulation
  • Knowledge and experience in quantitative data analysis including quantitative real time PCR and genome-wide data
  • Creative approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to apply relevant models, techniques and methods and develop new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and deploy them effectively
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and in writing
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, including record keeping
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise, plan and manage high volume of work
  • Highly collaborative and strong teamwork ethics

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Prior work experience with vertebrate animal models
  • Experience with analysis of next-generation sequencing data
  • Knowledge of the Greek language
