|Job Description|| |
The Cyprus Institute is a non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the Cyprus Institute are represented by three research centers: the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC).
The research focus of CaSToRC is the development and application of modelling and simulation methodologies, to advance scientific and technological research in Cyprus and the region. In addition to research and educational activities, it provides services through the operation of high performance supercomputing systems and associated user support to user communities. Strong collaborations also exist with the other research centers of the Institute. Current research topics in CaSToRC are broad and varied, fostering interdisciplinary exchange and scholarly discourse. They include: Computational Physics, Climate Modelling, Computational Chemistry and Scientific Computing and Data Science Applications.
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for the position of the SimEA ERA Chair. The successful candidate will assume the leadership of the Modelling and Simulation for Engineering Applications (SimEA) project after her/his appointment, operating within the institutional setting of CyI. In this function, s/he will be expected to take the lead in recruiting and managing a research group hired under the SimEA project and to establish the Management and Innovation Office of CaSToRC. S/he is also expected to play a major role in the postgraduate programs run by the Institute and in particular the “Computational Sciences” Doctoral program and the “Simulation and Data Science” Master program.
The selected candidate for the SimEA ERA Chair will be offered a professorship on a full-time basis with an internationally attractive salary and benefits package, commensurate to her/his high degree of responsibility and qualification.
The Modelling and Simulation for Engineering Applications project aims to consolidate and upgrade the already substantial activity CaSToRC in computational sciences adding computational engineering. This will be accomplished by attracting and installing an outstanding cluster of researchers, led by a professor of international stature to maximally utilize and upgrade the existing facilities, and pursue a program of research excellence and innovation. The SimEA ERA Chair is funded by a prestigious EU ERA Chair award of 2.5 Million Euro, a five-year grant. In addition, the Institute will provide 0.7 Million Euro for the computational infrastructure needs of the SimEA ERA Chair.
The principal focus will be on multiscale modelling, uncertainty quantification, and/or nonlinear dynamics integrated with high performance computing for simulation of challenging problems in application areas such as flows in porous media, biology, materials science or environmental science. CyI, being a technologically orientated research and educational institution, will provide the SimEA ERA Chair the opportunity to contribute to other related important activities of techno-economic nature, such as the definition of a road map for sustainable provision of computational infrastructure for Cyprus in view of the recent EU priorities in the Digital Single Market and EuroHPC.
The selected applicant will assume the SimEA ERA Chair to lead research in Modelling and Simulation for Engineering Applications at CaSToRC and the Institute in close collaboration with faculty, research staff and leadership of CyI. As a faculty member, an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching doctoral students is necessary as the successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the Institute’s graduate program.
The overall objectives, duties and responsibilities of the ERA Chair include the following:
Applicants should have an excellent record of internationally recognized research, which demonstrates a strong knowledge and link of high performance computing with engineering domains. The expertise of the successful candidate may encompass computational methods including multiscale modelling, uncertainty quantification, and/or nonlinear dynamics integrated with high performance computing for simulation of challenging problems in application areas such as fluid mechanics, biology, material science, energy or earth system science. Background in interdisciplinary, innovative research bridging advanced computing and data science with other scientific and engineering fields while contributing to the development of fundamental concepts of numerical analysis and algorithms or machine learning is highly desirable.
|Job Requirements|| |
Previous responsibility for managing interdisciplinary teams and complex projects - from development to implementation - would be a strong advantage, although outstanding young scientists and engineers are strongly encouraged to candidate to the ERA Chair position.
