Job Description

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a Research Assistant to work in the broader field of Atmospheric Sciences and Aerosol Science and Technology. The role of the Research Assistant will be to support the operation of the different Research Facilities of the Cyprus Institute such as:

  • the Instrumentation Lab and the Nanolab for the synthesis and characterization of aerosol nanoparticles;
  • The Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory and the Unmanned System Research Laboratory for the monitoring of air pollutants.

The position will be on a full-time basis for a fixed term of one year, renewable depending on performance and availability of funds, and will also have the possibility to be converted to a PhD project depending on the interest of the candidate.

This position is opened in the framework of the AQ-SERVE project (INTEGRATED/0916/0016) aiming to combine new technical developments (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and cost-effective miniaturized atmospheric sensors) with new scientific knowledge (characterization/prediction of air pollution) in order to develop and validate the first national Air Quality model platform with forecasting capacities. AQ-SERVE will form the basic tool for carrying out research projects related to Environmental Health and therefore address both the relevant subtopics “Environment” (transverse priority) and “Health” (Promoting of Public Health and Quality of Life; Diagnosis – Prevention / Risk Factors / Exposure to environmental factors) targeted by the Smart Specialisation Strategy of Cyprus with implications in other priority sectors (Tourism, Energy, Transport).



The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities:

  • Assist in the development of low-cost sensors for air quality monitoring
  • Assist in the characterization of air quality instruments and sensors
  • Ensure that all necessary Health and Safety measures are taken for the safety of staff, visitors and students
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Master Degree in any of the following: Physics (Experimental Physics), Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Nanotechnology or Instrument Technology
  • Familiarity with instrumentation and characterization techniques
  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Matlab, C++)
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • High interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language both verbal and in writing.

Preferred Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience in technology-related research laboratories.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and measures relevant to lab/technical activities
