The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research, innovation, and post graduate education. The CyI, through its established research centres, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL), a flagship facility of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) develops and operates Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) applied in various field of research, including atmospheric sciences, environmental monitoring, and various image based earth observations.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for Intern who will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through contributing to the activities of the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL).

The successful candidate will assist engineers as well as senior and junior researchers in the daily operations of the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) and in the development and deployment of novel UAS and payload.

The position will be on a full-time basis for a fixed term of twelve months, renewable depending on performance and availability of funds. The successful candidate will be under the supervision of the Head of the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory of CARE-C.


The successful candidate will be a member of the Research and Development Team of the USRL under the supervision of the USRL manager and CARE-C Director.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  1. Integration and Mounting of Systems
  2. Participates in scheduled Test Flights for the purpose of the development and optimization of the imaging systems.
  3. Participates in field deployment (including research campaigns) and demonstrations of UAVs in Cyprus and abroad.
  4. Remains updated on UAS imaging systems and associated technology and make appropriate recommendations to the team leader.
  5. Follow relevant guidance provided, Institute’s policy and procedures and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Mechanical and/or Automotive Engineering and/or Aerospace Engineering
  2. To have experience with standardized Wiring Assembly (Crimping, Soldering) of Electronic Systems and Sensors
  3. Excellent knowledge of the English language both verbal and writing
  4. Driving license is mandatory
  5. High interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
  6. Strong analytical and organizational skills


Preferred Qualifications

  1. Preferred experience in technology-related research laboratories, (Universities /Research Centres)
  2. Preferred experience in employing technology at fieldwork (Universities / Research Centres)
  3. Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and measures relevant to lab/technical activities
