The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI are pursued at its four Research Centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC) and the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center (CARE-C). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for Post-Doctoral Fellow(s) to pursue research in Inverse Problem research with emphasis on Image Reconstruction for Medical and geophysical Imaging.  The successful applicant(s) shall be actively engaged with the on-going research at CyI associated with the design/implementation/testing of image reconstruction algorithms and as well as the experimentation with software and hardware phantoms.


The successful candidate(s), depending on specialisation, will be engaged in a number of the following activities in several imaging modalities including medical imaging modalities (SPECT, PET, Infrared Imaging) and Geographical Imaging (including acoustic imaging and a number of Ground Penetrating Radars):

  • Mathematical modelling of the forward problem for a given modality.
  • The development and implementation of efficient algorithms in High Performance Computing (HPC) for image reconstruction in general and for medical and geophysical imaging in particular.
  • Design and implementation of software phantoms and simulation procedures for a given modality.
  • Design of experimental procedures and instrumentation for the validation and testing of the different image reconstruction techniques.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in a relevant field of science or engineering such as Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Computational Sciences, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of Statistics and statistical methods and data analysis
  • Excellent knowledge of programming languages such as Fortran, C, C++ and Python.
  • An understanding of high performance computing (OpenMP, OpenAcc, MPI, CUDA).
  • Excellent knowledge of oral and written English; knowledge of Greek will be an advantage.

Additional, preferred specialised experience in one or more of the following fields would be considered as an advantage:

  • Experience in the development of data-intensive applications (CPU/GPU).
  • Experience with Monte-Carlo Techniques.
  • Experience with scientific visualization software.
  • Experience with machine learning and deep learning architectures (Convolutional, Recurrent Neural Networks).
  • Experience with the PET and SPECT tomographic problems.
  • Experience with Geophysical Imaging
  • Expertise in curation of large data sets.

The appointment(s) will be of a full time basis, initially for a fixed term period of two (2) years with the potential of contract renewal depending on performance and availability of funds. The annual salary will depend on the applicants’ experience and qualifications.
