Job Description

The new faculty member will enhance and provide leadership in the field of Energy Policy within the activities of the Energy Division of EEWRC, and also lead the development and delivery of relevant future academic courses at CyI’s Graduate School. The position is indented for a senior tenured appointment (Associate of Full professor) and priority will be given to such an appointment; applications for a tenured tack Assistant Professor slot will also be considered.

The scientific area of Energy Policy is an upcoming but integral part of the Energy Division’s portfolio and as a research field, is of high importance both for Cyprus and the region. It concerns an activity whose importance is rising rapidly and it is expected to be generously funded by the EU because of its importance to the global energy transition and climate change. The main research fields include Long-term Energy Strategy and modelling, critical analysis of energy policy scenarios, impacts assessments of energy use scenarios, technoeconomic (T/E) assessment of different energy technology options, and support for national and international authorities on topics of energy futures.

The successful candidate will be actively engaged with expanding the group’s research portfolio, implementing the on-going research, the development of novel ideas and concepts and the development of relevant academic courses. As a faculty member, an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching master or doctoral students is necessary as the successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the Institute’s graduate program.

The candidate will work in Cyprus and will be offered a tenured or tenure-track position and an attractive salary and benefits package depending on the level of experience. He/She will be reporting to the Provost of the Institute.


The successful candidate will be responsible for helping to shape and advance the Cyprus Institute’s and EEWRC's research agenda by:

  • Developing and implementing strategies appropriate to the Institute’s mission;
  • Actively participating in the creation of a world-class research program in the areas of energy policy and related scientific areas;
  • Securing financial and other resources from national and international sources;
  • Mentoring, educating and providing research guidance to graduate students in CyI's master or doctoral program;
  • Initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to his/her respective fields;
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of facilities appropriate to the research of the Cyprus Institute;
  • Assisting in building a transdisciplinary research environment and collaborations with other research areas where energy plays a key role;
  • Communicating the results and implications of research conducted in EEWRC and the Institute at all levels, including academic, popular, and policy-related.
Job Requirements

The successful candidate must have a proven research record of international standing, as well as teaching and postgraduate training record appropriate for the rank they are applying for. In addition, the following qualifications are required:

  • PhD degree in a relevant field of science or engineering
  • Proven record of international standing appropriate for the rank they are applying
  • A minimum of three years of post-doctoral research experience or equivalent in relevant fields of research is required for the rank of Assistant Professor; for the ranks of Associate Professor and Professor, international norms typical for Research Universities apply
  • Experience in mentoring and teaching master or doctoral students
  • Research experience in relevant field
  • Publications and invited talks in relevant field
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is a prerequisite
