The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL)
The combination of the most recent developments on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and miniaturized sensors creates unique opportunities to establish rapidly cost-effective observations of the atmospheric column and fill the gap between ground-based and satellite measurements. Thanks to lowering the cost of investment and field operation, new UAV-sensor systems have the potential, yet unexplored, to enhance vertically the geographical coverage of international atmospheric networks and play a critical role in the rigorous quantification of the effect of climate forcers (such as aerosols) on the earth radiation budget and climate.
The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a rapidly grown facility developed in the framework of the “Autonomous Flying Platforms for Atmospheric and Earth Surface Observation” Project (APAESO). The facility is comprised of various sizes of fixed and rotary wing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), a mobile Ground Control Station and a fully equipped laboratory and workshop dedicated to Unmanned Systems and their Applications. After a period of research and prototyping in the field of UAS, the USRL is looking into further growth by increasing the research activities but also emphasizing into innovation and commercialization of its products and services.
In order to accomplish this new target, The Cyprus Institute is seeking for a scientist with Engineering background to lead and supervise the Research and Development activities of the USRL team. The selected candidate should have a broad engineering background and knowledge in order to be able to monitor and supervise the work performed by the Electronic and Mechanical Engineers, Software Developers, Scientists, and Pilots.
S/he will work as the bridge between the Research and Technical personnel and the UAS Pilot team in order to better organize and perform efficiently the increasing number of unmanned aerial operations. In addition, s/he will support the EMME-CARE Coordinator and USRL Manager in exploring and attracting new funding opportunities through research funds and/or development and innovation funds.
This position is partly supported by the EU H2020 project “EMME-CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre; TEAMING Grant no. 856612), within which the Cyprus Institute is establishing a “Centre of Excellence” in Climate and Atmosphere research for the EMME region in cooperation with EU Advanced Partners (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany; University of Helsinki in Finland; and CEA in France).
