The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit Research and Educational Institution with a strong Scientific and Technological orientation, emphasizing in International collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CyI, through its established Research Centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels.  Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas. Within this context, CyI in cooperation with Advanced Partners Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, University of Helsinki and Commission for Atomic Energy – Laboratory for Sciences of the Climate and the Environment, are establishing the “(EMME-CARE) Eastern Mediterranean Middle East – Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre of Excellence” under Horizon 2020 – TEAMING Grant no. 856612.

Furthermore, CyI is working closely with the government of the Republic of Cyprus for the implementation of Cyprus Climate Change Initiative (CCI), which constitutes a regional and international Initiative to coordinate the efforts of the EMME region to ameliorate Climate Change and its impacts.  The CCI is scientifically supported by The Cyprus Institute, which through a number of task forces will compile regionally-oriented scientific knowledge of Climate Change impacts aiming to better integrate national/regional policies within the EU framework.

Under the Supervision of the EMME-CARE Director, and the co-Supervision of the Director of CCI, the successful candidate will contribute in the execution of all communication, exploitation and promotional related activities of EMME-CARE and CCI.  The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the execution of the general communication and public relations activities of the EMME-CARE Centre-of-Excellence, as well as its external and internal dissemination activities, including the organization of events, conferences, and other related activities.

The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a fixed-term period, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and EMME-CARE and Institute needs.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  • Contribution to the planning, development and implementation of the Communication and public relations strategies, plans, policies and relevant deliverables of EMME-CARE;
  • Contribution to EMME-CARE and CCI internal communications activities by advising and supporting students, faculty and academic staff to promote and disseminate their research and scholarships to a variety of academic and non-academic audiences and stakeholders.
  • Support EMME-CARE/CCI’s external communications activities with prospective students, academics, policy-makers, key partners and stakeholders and the general public, including the preparation of media and publicity materials.
  • Coordination and maintenance of EMME-CARE and CCI’s social media presence by managing and updating information on the Centre’s social media channels, and engaging with users to ensure the Centre’s social media presence is at the forefront of social media developments and trends.
  • Liaising with, and answering enquiries from media, individuals and other organizations, often via telephone and email;
  • Researching, writing and distributing original news content including articles, newsletters and press releases for EMME-CARE/CCI’s dissemination channels (e.g. website, email, social media, etc.) including external targeted media (e.g. printed and online media, etc.) at national and EU/International levels;
  • Contribution to the organization of outreach and dissemination events including press conferences, workshops, exhibitions, open days and press tours, and fostering community relations through involvement in community initiatives;
  • Collating and analyzing media coverage and maintaining and working with the EMME-CARE webmaster/ IT Officer for updating relevant information on the Centre’s website;
Job Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Master degree or similar degree in a relevant field such as Communications, Digital Marketing, Journalism, Literature, Public Relations or other humanities or science field
  • Minimum five (5) years of related demonstrable experience in a similar or relevant position
  • Experience in planning and managing outreach and communication events.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent written skills in both Greek and English.
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency /expertise in Microsoft Office Suite including applications of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and knowledge in internet search engines.
  • Excellent planning and project management skills.
  • Excellent initiative, creativity and motivation skills
  • The position requires a high degree of independent working with minimal supervision and attention to detail.
  • High interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience in developing and managing corporate web and social media profiles.
  • Good knowledge of different media agendas and audiences and understanding of the Higher Education and Research & Innovation sectors.
  • Experience with and Acquaintances/Contacts in Media Agencies and Organizations at national, regional and EU/International levels.
  • Awareness of Environmental and Climate Change issues
