The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC) of CyI invites applications for a professional who will be responsible of implementing computational co-development activities foreseen under the SimEA ERA Chair Project.

The SimEA ERA Chair project

The Modelling and Simulation for Engineering Applications project aims to consolidate and upgrade the already substantial activity CaSToRC in computational sciences adding computational engineering. This will be accomplished by attracting and installing an outstanding cluster of researchers, led by a professor of international stature to maximally utilize and upgrade the existing facilities, and pursue a program of research excellence and innovation. The SimEA ERA Chair is funded by a prestigious EU ERA Chair award of 2.5 Million Euro, a five-year grant. In addition, the Institute will provide 0.7 Million Euro for the computational infrastructure needs of the SimEA ERA Chair.


Position Description

The selected applicant will be integrated in the team managed by the ERA Chair and will coordinate the implementation of the research and innovation program of the ERA Chair, which will include actively promoting co-development projects with industry and government, and organising training events, internships and an annual industry week.

The appointment will be on a fixed term appointment, full-time basis, with the prospect of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.

An attractive remuneration package commensurate to the candidate's qualifications and level of experience will be offered to the selected candidate. Training opportunities for this position will be offered at the Industry Program of the National Centre for Supercomputing Applications of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and the Industry Relations of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre.


The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities

  1. Facilitate knowledge transfer by raising awareness in industry and government for the potential of High-Performance Computing and AI
  2. Identify projects from industry and government and scope the expertise and computational resources needed
  3. Define co-development projects with industry and government in coordination with the ERA Chair and his team
  4. Identify funding opportunities and participate in the preparation of proposals that involve industrial participation and in particular SMEs
  5. Implement under the leadership of the ERA chair, the organization of training events targeting industry and government
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD degree in Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Computational Engineering or Computer Science
  • Previous experience in a research/academic institution
  • Excellent knowledge of oral and written English Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage
  • Strong scientific and technical writing skills
  • Good knowledge of at least one programming language
  • High level of organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • High level of communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills and the ability to operate in a multicultural/multidisciplinary environment
  • Ability to multitask changing priorities with limited supervision


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in proposal writing for competitive funding
  • Experience in presenting to medium and large audiences
  • Experience in engaging in research and development projects with industry
