The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the CyI are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of CyI invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist position in computational science with expertise in machine and deep learning, big data management and visualisation.  The candidate will further develop the Institute’s research on machine and deep learning approaches and visualisation, in areas such as bioinformatics, medical imaging, computational physics and computational fluid dynamics.

The appointment(s) will be of a full time basis, initially for a fixed term period with the potential of contract renewal depending on performance and availability of funds. The annual salary will depend on the applicants’ experience and qualifications.


The successful candidate(s), depending on specialisation, will be carrying out the following activities:

  • Advancing machine learning techniques, including deep learning for the analysis of data
  • Contributing to the supervision of students in the field of machine learning
  • Take initiatives in adopting new methodologies for data analytics and introducing them to other scientists at CaSToRC
  • Developing proposals and projects for external funding
  • Publishing and communicating research findings to academic, policy and public audiences
  • Actively pursuing regional and international networking
  • Prepare training material and participate in training/teaching courses
  • Promote teamwork, local and international collaboration in his/her area of expertise
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Applied mathematics, Bioinformatics, Physical Sciences or a related field
  • Prior research experience in machine learning and data analysis
  • Strong track record of peer reviewed related publications
  • Presentations in conferences and other meetings
  • Experience with applying machine learning to scientific applications
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language both written and verbal
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt to a multicultural/multidisciplinary environment

Preferred experience

  • Experience with collaborating with domain scientists
  • Experience in preparation of research proposals
