Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.


Within this context, CyI in cooperation with Advanced Partners Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, University of Helsinki and Commission for Atomic Energy, is establishing the “Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)” under Horizon 2020 – EMME-CARE TEAMING Grant no. 856612.


The CyI invites applications for a Research Assistant for full-time appointment in the

  • Operation of the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO), which is a network of environmental stations, and
  • Operation and Quality Assurance of the PROTEAS’ Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) station, which is a state-of-the-art solar radiation and meteorological measurement station.

The successful candidate will support research programs in environmental/atmospheric applications with interest and focus on the physical-chemical characterization of fine particulate matter, and research programs on Energy, particularly on Renewable Energy Sources. They will be a member of a dynamic team composed by international researchers investigating the role of aerosols in climate and air quality and energy applications targeted to the energy transition to a decarbonized energy future.



CAO is currently part of ACTRIS, AERONET, GAW, TCCON and EMEP international networks and has attracted scientists from several European institutions conducting research on ambient gas and aerosol science and technology. The CAO gathers the latest instrumentation for online monitoring of aerosol chemical composition and optical properties in combination with analysis of greenhouse gaseous species following international, standardized operating procedures in compliance with ACTRIS and GAW protocols.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The data quality, following ACTRIS standards, of the measurements performed at CAO. For this purpose, the successful candidate will be trained by CyI’s expert teams through hands-on activities/practices to obtain technical skills that are necessary to quality control the archive produced.
  • Maintaining and updating the measurement database of CAO
  • Be responsible for the long-term operation of the TCCON station at CyI Athalassa, including the regular control and maintenance alongside data processing and reporting to Scientific PIs.

In addition, the successful candidate will also assist in the daily operation of CAO by participating in the scheduled maintenance of CAO equipment, including handling of environmental samples and logistics of stock (consumables).


In addition, CyI is currently finalizing the siting of a fully functional BSRN station at the PROTEAS facility at Pentakomo, and aims to be established as a full member of the BSRN network. The BSRN is a radiometric network initiated by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) to support the climate research by providing validation material for satellite radiometry and climate models. The objective of the BSRN is to provide observations of the best possible quality for short and long-wave surface radiation fluxes with a high sampling rate, which are believed to play an important role in climate change modelling.

The successful candidate will be also acting as the PROTEAS’ BSRN station scientist and will be responsible for:

  • Adopting and long-term preserving of the BSRN operational practices in terms of data acquisition, data management, data archiving and data quality assurance.
  • Maintaining and updating the measurement database of the BSRN
  • The overall station maintenance for both, the BSRN hardware and software, taking care that all the necessary maintenance tasks within the guidelines and standards set by the BSRN are being performed.



  1. Responsible for the daily operation of CAO (maintenance, calibration, international inter-comparison studies)
  2. Quality control of the CAO archive
  3. Logistics support to the Atmospheric Monitoring group (consumables, stock, inventory)
  4. Support of research activities within the CyI/CARE-C/Environmental Observations Department (e.g. TCCON station)
  5. Participating in the field intensive campaigns of the Institute
  6. Responsible for the daily operation of the PROTEAS’ BSRN station.
  7. Perform data reduction procedures and apply data filtering techniques according to BSRN standards
  8. Perform Quality Assurance techniques in terms of signal redundancy, visual and thorough inspection of data, data conversion and manipulation etc.
  9. Submission of BSRN data (in monthly blocks) to the international BSRN archive   
  10. Scheduling and performing the daily, weekly, monthly, six-monthly and annual maintenance of the BSRN station’s hardware and software
  11. Communicate the BSRN data among the EEWRC divisions and CARE-C Departments, when requested
Job Requirements

Required Experience and Qualifications

  1. PhD in Atmospheric Sciences
  2. First author publication in peer reviewed journal
  3. Presentation in two international conferences
  4. 3-year research experience (incl. PhD)
  5. Basic knowledge of environmental physics and chemistry
  6. One-year experience of experimental work in an environmental laboratory
  7. Driving license (mandatory)
  8. Knowledge of programming (Matlab and/or Igor)
  9. Experience in data acquisition systems (DAQ) and signal post processing. Experience in LabVIEW is considered an advantage
  10. Strong analytical and organizational skills
  11. High interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
  12. Excellent knowledge of English, both verbal and writing


Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of the Greek Language will be an advantage
  2. Data Quality Assurance and management
  3. Database management using SQL, preferable PostgreSQL.
  4. Familiarity with BSRN protocols for data management
  5. Familiarity with the operation, maintenance and quality insurance of solar radiation and meteorological data.
