Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The successful candidate will manage and provide consultation to the Institute management on all aspects with regards to Health and Safety. The successful candidate is expected, based on legislation and good practice standards, to establish, manage and monitor policies, process guidelines, communications, trainings and systems to ensure all responsibilities associated with Health and Safety that adhere both to the Operational and Research activities.


The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities

  • Ensure that the workplace environment including the Institute’s office facilities, laboratory areas and in field-work assignments are without risk to health and safety.
  • Ensure that all Health & Safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations are adhered and are regularly reviewed, updated and communicated.
  • Ensure the Institute meets its statutory obligations in all areas pertaining to health, safety and welfare at work, including statutory training and reporting.
  • Ensure the completion and regular review of risk assessments for all lab activities, field works, as well as for the operation of equipment.
  • Ensure that all accidents or near-misses are documented, investigated and recommended improvements are implemented.
  • Ensure that safety inspections are carried out, fire drills and fire alarms are correctly reported, safety inspections, risk assessments and lone working procedures are managed and employees are aware of their responsibilities.
  • Develop training programs for office and laboratory users.
  • Coordinate the development of health & safety policies, systems of work and procedures.
  • Ensure full and accurate health and safety and training records are maintained.
  • Establish a full programme of documented health & safety inspections, audits and checks.
  • Establish a structured programme of health & safety training throughout the Institute.
  • Manage and plan the agenda for, chair or coordinate and formulate & distribute minutes for the Health & Safety Committee meetings.
  • Ensure that all agreed action points are completed within deadlines.
  • Keep up to date with all aspects of relevant health, safety & welfare at work legislation and communicate relevant changes to the Institute community.
  • Provide regular reports to the Vice President of Operations and Institute senior management on relevant health and safety activities.
  • Promoting and maintaining safety in the work place.
  • Participate in relevant staff development activities and develop new skills and competencies to meet the changing needs of the service; assist in the training and mentoring of new staff.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree on relevant subjects of study
  • Relevant certificates and/or professional trainings on Health and Safety, Risk Assessment and other relevant trainings as required by the relevant legislations
  • Related and appropriate practical experience in a research/academic environment
  • Five years of relevant experience 
  • Excellent IT skills in MS Office and particularly in Excel as well as ability in the use of other software and systems.
  • Excellent knowledge and command of the English language both verbally and in writing
  • High level organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to multitask changing priorities with limited supervision in a high-pressure work environment
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt in a multicultural environment
  • Ability to communicate with discretion and to maintain confidentiality in all matters

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate related with Quality Management
  • Experience with ISO or other quality related procedures
