The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research and postgraduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The research assistant will be working with Asst. Prof. Margaritis focusing of archaeobotanical remains from different sites in Cyprus as part of the RPF Face to Face: Meet an Ancient Cypriot Integrated Project led by Asst. Prof Lorentz.

The project

The Face to Face: Meet an Ancient Cypriot (FF-MAC) – project is funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation (RPF) and involves a quadruple helix consortium of academia, enterprises, governmental services and policy makers, and societal stakeholders, with a project budget of over 1 million Eur. The overall aim of the project is to increase the appeal and accessibility of cultural heritage for tourism through encounters with real individuals from the Cypriot past, based on bioarchaeological research leading to construction of osteobiographies, ancient life stories, and visitor encounters with real, individual life stories from the past. The project involves an integrated intervention through research, and technological and innovation activities for addressing important challenges in the relevant sector.

The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a fixed-term period of seven months, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.


The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities:

  • Identification of plant remains
  • Quantification and statistics of archaeobotanical data sets
  • Analysis and Interpretation of the archaeobotanical assemblage
  • Reporting on the interpretation of archaeobotanical assemblages
  • Responsible for the project’s website component concerning archaeobotanical remains in the context of ancient life histories
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • A Master degree in Environmental Archaeology with a specialization in Archaeobotany
  • At least two years of experience in creating plant reference collections
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural, multinational environment
  • High level organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language both verbal and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the Archaeobotany of Cyprus and East Mediterranean
