The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the CyI are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The CyI invites applications for an Internship focusing in the operation of Air Quality monitoring observations. The Internship will be on a full-time basis and will allow the successful candidate to gain hands-on learning and working experience through supporting the group’s research programs in environmental/atmospheric applications with focus on the physical-chemical characterization of fine particulate matter.

The Intern will participate in activities as a member of a dynamic team composed by scientists investigating the role of aerosols in climate and air quality. The selected candidate will be involved in:

  • activities relevant to the collaboration with the Department of Labour Inspection (DLI, Ministry of Labour, Welfare, and Social Insurance) which is leading the Cyprus Air Quality network,
  • EU HORIZON2020 ACTRIS-2 project, focusing on the integration of state-of-the-art European ground-based stations for long-term observations of aerosols, clouds and short lived gases.

The successful candidate will be trained by CyI expert teams through hands-on activities/practices to obtain technical skills that are necessary to operate daily routine observations typically performed within the Cyprus Air Quality network (weekly access to the station with the car of the Cyprus Institute) and in particular the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory ( located at Agia Marina Xyliatou.


The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities:

  • Weekly visits to the stations in Cyprus (c.a. two days / week)
  • Maintenance of the Air Quality stations (verification on instruments, calibrations, data processing, sample preparation)
  • Support the Atmosphere & Climate division of the Cyprus Institute in its research activities (field campaigns, lab analysis, monitoring activities)
  • Communicate the results to the group leader (reports).
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Chemistry- specialization in Environmental Studies preferred
  • Driving license (category B)
  • Experience in graphical and statistical data analysis (Pack Office)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent knowledge of oral and written English
  • Greek language will be considered as an advantage

The appointment will be of a full time basis, for a fixed term period of eleven (11) months.
