Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (www.cyi.ac.cy) invites applications for new faculty member(s) active in the research fields of its Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC). The position(s) offer excellent possibilities for professional development for highly motivated individuals in a field of growing importance in research. The faculty rank to be awarded (Assistant, Associate, Professor) will be determined by the selection committee based on the outcome of the interviews.

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the Cyprus Institute are represented by three research centers: the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC).

CaSToRC is one of three centers with a research focus on the development and application of intense computational methods including modelling, simulation, visualization, and data methodologies, to advance scientific and technological research in Cyprus and the region. In addition to research and educational activities it provides services through the operation of high performance supercomputing systems and associated user support to many scientific and technical communities. Strong relationships also exist with the Institute’s other research centers.

Current research topics in CaSToRC are broad and varied, fostering interdisciplinary exchange and scholarly discourse. They include:

  1. Scientific Computing and Data Intensive Applications
  2. Computational physics, chemistry and biology
  3. Computational Science for Energy systems, Climate, Weather & Environmental Science and medical physics/imaging Applications of High Performance Computing in digital cultural heritage, visualization and engineering

These activities are largely funded by competitive European and local grants and the successful candidate(s) is expected to contribute to them.

Position Description

The selected applicant is indented to primarily enhance the competencies of the center in the area of Data Science preferably with emphasis on topics such as machine learning including deep learning and data analytics. Other areas of competencies will be considered in addition in case of demonstrated excellence. He/she will implement and advance the research agenda of the Institute and CaSToRC in close collaboration with faculty, research staff and leadership of CyI. As a faculty member(s), an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching doctoral students is necessary as the successful candidate(s) will be expected to actively contribute to the Institute’s graduate program. He/she will work in Cyprus and be offered a tenure-track position an attractive salary and benefits package.

Responsibilities

The new faculty member(s) will contribute in shaping the Institute’s research agenda by:

  • developing and implementing strategies appropriate to the Institute’s mission;
  • developing a world-class research program in the area of Data Science in accordance with the mission and developmental plan of CaSToRC;
  • securing financial and other resources from national and international sources;
  • mentoring, educating and providing research guidance to graduate students;
  • initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to his/her respective fields;
  • contributing to the development and implementation of facilities appropriate to the research of the Cyprus Institute;
  • communicating the results and implications of research conducted in CaSToRC and the Institute at all levels, including academic, popular, and policy-related.
Job Requirements

Profile

The successful candidate(s) are expected to have a proven record of international standing appropriate for the rank they are applying. A minimum of three years of post-doctoral research experience or equivalent in relevant fields of research is required for the rank of Assistant Professor; for the ranks of Associate Professor and Professor, international norms typical for Research Universities apply. The selected candidate(s) must have excellent interpersonal and management skills. Proficiency in spoken and written English is a requisite.
