The Cyprus Institute ( invites applications for an HPC System Engineer in the High Performance Computing (HPC) Facility Operations Group.  The institute is an international science and technology research and post-graduate education organization, in pursuit of regional and inter-regional problems in the Eastern Mediterranean often of global significance.   

Through the operation of high performance supercomputing systems and associated user support for Cyprus and the region, the HPC Facility provides services to many scientific and technical communities.

Job Description:

The HPC Systems Engineer will be part of a team responsible for the day-to-day operation of the HPC Facility at the Cyprus Institute. As a member of the HPC Facility operations team the successful candidate will share responsibility for the systems administration of the facilities which include small and large scale HPC systems, data storage, HPC networks as well as pre and post-processing systems. Duties include the interaction with HPC users and resource allocation committees, hardware maintenance and upgrade, technology evaluation and follow-up. The successful candidate will work in Cyprus and will report to the Head of the HPC Facility.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • System Administration (Linux-based systems)
  • System design, deployment, and performance evaluation
  • Systems Monitoring
  • System tools development
  • Assistance in user support

Education and Qualifications:


  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field such as Computer Science and Computer Engineering

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  • Linux experience
  • Shell scripting (Bash)
  • Programming Languages: Python (highly desired), javascript
  • Good knowledge of Computer Architecture
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language. Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage.
  • High level organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to multitask changing priorities with limited supervision in a high-pressure work environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt in a multicultural environment
  • Ability to communicate with discretion and to maintain confidentiality in all matters

Additional desirable skills:

  • Networking certifications (e.g. CISCO)
  • Linux certifications (e.g. RedHat)
  • Network Security-related certifications
