The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the CyI are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

Description of the Position

The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) of the Cyprus Institute is a rapidly grown facility developed in the framework of the “Autonomous Flying Platforms for Atmospheric and Earth Surface Observation” Project (APAESO). The facility is comprised by fixed and rotary wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) of various sizes, a mobile Ground Control Station, a fully equipped laboratory, and workshop dedicated to Unmanned Systems and their Applications.

Due to the increasing demand in aircraft manufacturing and flying operations mostly related to atmospheric research EU projects, the Cyprus Institute is seeking an experienced person in building fixed wing and multirotor composite aircrafts. As part of his/her appointment, s/he will be responsible of designing, molding, prototyping and producing high end unmanned aircrafts using composite materials. In addition, the candidate should be capable in participating in test-flights and research campaigns providing assistance in the maintenance and repairs of the USRL UAV fleet.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To design and develop new lightweight aircrafts
  • Optimization of current airframes (flying characteristics, structure, weight)
  • To maintain the airworthiness of the USRL UAV fleet in order to be available at any time
  • Responsible for setting up a new workshop dedicated to composite materials manufacturing.
  • The machining of lightweight metals. (aluminum, titanium)
  • To repair and maintain the USRL UAV fleet
  • To participate in field deployment (including research campaigns) and demonstrations of UAVs.

Candidate Profile Requirements

Relevant Experience:

  • Required relevant experience minimum of five (5) years. 
  • Experienced in producing molds for airframes and aircraft components

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  • Specialized in processing composite materials. (carbon, kevlar, fiberglass, soric, honeycomb)
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered as an advantage.
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt to a multicultural/multinational environment
  • High level of organizational, analytical and problem solving skills

Preferred Additional Skills (will be considered an advantage):

  • Capable of flying lightweight UAV / RC models
  • Knowledge in basic Aerodynamics and flight theory
  • Familiar with UAVs and their components
