Associate Research Scientist in Regional Climate Change Modelling (EEWRC_ARC_18_02)

Reference Number
EEWRC_ARC_18_02
Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees (www.cyi.ac.cy). Research in the Cyprus Institute is conducted in its three research centers: the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC).

The EEWRC addressed issues of regional interest and of global significance in the fields of energy, environmental and water research, with a focus on their specific regional, East-Mediterranean manifestations. Its research agenda addresses the great challenges related to: the mitigation and adaptation strategies necessitated by climate change, a reduced dependence on hydrocarbon energy sources and achieving a low carbon economy through the employment of renewables (solar), synergies between Renewable and Hydrocarbon energy sources and enabling a sustainable management of water and other natural resources in arid and semi-arid environments.

Description of the Position

The candidate will further develop the Institute’s research on regional climate change modelling, with focus on the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East/North Africa. The research will be carried out within the Atmosphere and Climate Division of EEWRC/CyI and will consist of dynamical downscaling of global climate model projections using limited area atmospheric and earth system models at high horizontal resolution, building on CyI’s previous work and contributing to the efforts of the CORDEX international program.

Job Requirements

Responsibilities

The successful candidate’s main responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Undertake research to optimize, evaluate and utilise Regional Climate Models at very high horizontal resolutions to improve the climate simulation at regional and local scales
  • Work within the Division’s climate modelling team to assess the atmospheric and environmental feedbacks and impacts of the changing climate with emphasis on hydroclimatic extremes
  • Publish and communicate the research output and implications at different levels, including academic, public and policy related
  • Actively pursue regional and international networking, especially in relation to CyI’s CORDEX activities
  • Attract external funding to sustain in the medium/long-term the relevant research activities
  • Participate in the educational programs of the Institute

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in a relevant field of Climate modelling
  • Participation in national and European projects
  • Publications in scientific journals
  • Abstract/paper contributions in scientific conferences
  • At least 3 years of research experience
  • Exposure to climate dynamical downscaling techniques
  • Familiarity with high performance computing and experience with statistical/graphics programming (R-Project)
  • Communication of climate change concepts to (and active engagement with) stakeholders and general audiences

Other Requirements

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • High interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both verbal and writing. Knowledge of Greek will be considered an advantage
