The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the CyI are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The CyI invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist in Concentrated Solar Power. The successful candidate(s) shall be actively engaged with the on-going research at CyI associated with ongoing research activities in the Concentrated Solar Power/Energy Storage/Desalination/Control Systems portfolio of the Energy Division at CyI.


The successful candidate(s) will be carrying out the following activities:

  • Design, construction, modeling,  testing and optimization of experimental components associated with the CSP Receivers technology Solar Thermal Energy Storage research carried out at the CyI and/or,
  • Development or adaptation of modeling, optimization and control systems for a Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant and/or,
  • Working with sensors, data analysis and modelling aimed at improving the efficiency of CSP systems and/or,
  • Modelling of CSP systems and/or Technoeconomic studies,
  • Modelling of low temperature CSP systems integrated in the building environment to supply HVAC.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in a relevant field of science or engineering such as Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Experimental Physics
  • At least three (3) years of postdoctoral or research experience in a relevant field
  • Publications in a relevant field
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt to a multicultural/multinational environment
  • High level of organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage.

Additional, preferred specialised experience in one or more of the following fields would be considered as an advantage:

  • Instrumentation,
  • Control systems,
  • Solar-Thermal plants, Concentrating Solar Power, co-generation of concentrated solar power and desalination,
  • Thermal storage systems (e.g. molten salts), high temperature engineering,
  • Heat-transfers engineering
  • Nearly Zero Energy Buildings.
  • The appointment will be of a full time basis, initially for a fixed term period of two (2) years with the potential of contract renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.
