Associate Research Scientist in Experimental Atmospheric Sciences (EEWRC_ARSAES_18_06)

Reference Number
Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the CyI are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The mission of the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO; is to provide high quality long-term observations of key atmospheric pollutants relevant to air quality and climate change. Located at a rural site of Cyprus, this station is co-operated with the Department of Labour Inspection, in charge of the air quality network in Cyprus. The station is ideally located to document long-range transported pollution from three continents (Europe, Africa, and West Asia) and dust aerosols from the two largest desert regions in the world (Sahara, Middle East). It maintains on-site facilities and supportive infrastructure for research, development and testing of technologies related to atmospheric measurements. This station operates through EU funds that facilitate the transnational access of international scientific community on a merit-based priority scheme.

It is supported by the Horizon 2020 ACTRIS2 project which is the European Research Infrastructure for the observation of Aerosol, Clouds, and Trace gases, currently on the roadmap of European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI).

The successful candidate will coordinate the current and future long-term atmospheric observations performed at the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO). S/he will be responsible for the data quality control/assurance and the general performance of the atmospheric instrumentation. The candidate will support CAO operational and scientific activities, participate to international field campaigns, and disseminate the results in peer-reviewed journals.

S/he will support teaching and hands-on training of the CyI (Environmental Atmospheric Sciences) doctoral and Master programs. Active contribution in securing funds from competitive national and European research calls is also expected.

The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a period of three years, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.

The successful candidate(s) will be carrying out the following activities:

  • Management of the daily operation of CAO (incl. coordination of technical staff, budget monitoring, quality control/quality assurance activities, data management)
  • Scientific exploitation/dissemination of experimental data obtained at CAO on topics related to Air Quality and Climate forcing (aerosol-cloud interactions and greenhouse gases) within ongoing (EU) research projects (peer-review publications)
  • Scientific support to the National Air Quality Network (DLI) in complying with several EU environmental Air Quality directives (yearly reporting)
  • Research activities within the CyI/EEWRC/Atmosphere Group; writing/managing EU proposals/projects; scientific participations/collaborations within EU research networks, COST actions, and strategic partners in France/Germany/Finland (including secondments).
  • Active Contribution to the CyI doctoral and Master programs (teaching, hands-on training) and supervision of students working at CAO.
  • Attracting external funding to sustain in the medium/long-term the relevant research activities
  • Participating  in the field intensive campaigns of the Institute
