The Cyprus Institute (www.cyi.ac.cy) invites applications for a new faculty member active in research fields served at its Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC). The position offers excellent possibilities for professional development for highly motivated individuals in a field of growing importance in research.
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the Cyprus Institute are represented by three research centers: the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Research Center (STARC), and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC).
CaSToRC has a research focus on the development of computational approaches that include modelling and simulation, visualization, and data methodologies, in order to advance scientific and engineering applications. In addition to research and educational activities it provides services through the operation of supercomputing systems and associated user support to the scientific and industrial communities. Strong relationships also exist with the Institute’s other two research centers.
Current research topics in CaSToRC are broad and varied, fostering interdisciplinary exchange and scholarly discourse. They include:
A number of these activities are funded by competitive European and local grants and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to them.
The selected applicant is intended to primarily enhance the competencies of the center in the area of Data Science and its Applications. Preference will be given to experienced candidates (level of Associate or Full Professor) with demonstrated machine learning including deep learning expertise with applications to scientific and engineering areas. Other areas of competencies will be considered in addition in case of demonstrated excellence. S/he will implement and advance the research agenda of the Institute and CaSToRC in close collaboration with faculty, research staff and leadership of CyI. As a faculty member, an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching doctoral and Master’s students is necessary as the successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the Institute’s graduate program. The candidate will work in Cyprus and will be offered a tenure or tenure-track position and an attractive salary and benefits package depending on the level of experience.

The successful candidate must have a proven research record of international standing as well as teaching and postgraduate training record appropriate for the rank they are applying for. A minimum of three years of post-doctoral research experience or equivalent in relevant fields of research is required for the rank of Assistant Professor; for the ranks of Associate Professor and Professor, international norms typical for Research Universities apply. The selected candidate must have excellent interpersonal and management skills as well as an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching graduate students depending on the rank they are applying for. Proficiency in spoken and written English is a requisite.
