Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The candidate will further develop the Institute’s research on regional atmospheric and chemistry modelling, with focus on the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East/North Africa. The research will be carried out within the Atmosphere and Climate Division of EEWRC/CyI and will consist of utilization of online meteorological and chemical models, global, regional and local emission inventories and satellite data for evaluation and improvement of models and emissions for air quality research and regulatory purposes, building on CyI’s previous work and contributing to the efforts of international projects and communities.

The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a fixed-term period, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.


The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities:

  • Undertake research to optimize, evaluate and utilise regional atmospheric and chemistry models to improve air quality simulations at regional and local scales both from emissions of anthropogenic origin and natural sources (e.g. desert dust).
  • Develop and use global, regional and local emission inventories at very high horizontal resolutions (10 km down to 1 km) for air pollution studies, evaluate and update these with the use of satellite data to assess trends in the region, and identify missing/altered sources. 
  • Work within the division’s modelling team to assess the atmospheric and environmental feedbacks and interactions of anthropogenic and natural aerosols with atmospheric processes, and investigate air quality in a changing climate.
  • Perform health impact studies on the burden of disease from airborne pollution in the region under different climatic and emission scenarios.
  • Publish and communicate the research output and implications at different levels, including academic, public and policy related.
  • Actively pursue regional and international networking, especially in relation to air quality modelling communities and networks.
  • Attract external funding to sustain in the medium/long-term the relevant research activities.
  • Participate in the educational programmes of the institute.


Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in a relevant discipline with specialization in atmospheric and air quality modelling, emission inventories, use of satellite data
  • At least five (5) years of research experience, including PhD studies
  • Presentation of scientific results to general audiences
  • Presentations in scientific conferences
  • Participation in national and European projects and communities
  • Publications in scientific journals
  • Familiarity with high performance computing, managing large datasets, and experience with statistical/graphics programming
  • Communication of air quality to, and active engagement with, stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • High interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both verbal and writing. Knowledge of Greek will be considered an advantage
