Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The selected scientist will lead research activities in the field of Digital imaging / 3D documentation and visualization for Archaeology, Art and Cultural Heritage. As such, s/he will manage and lead the development of the 2D/3D laboratory in the context of APAC Labs/ STARC.

The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a fixed-term period, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.


The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities:

  • Responsible for the 2D/ 3D documentation, post-processing and geometry analysis research activities.
  • Development and overseeing the activities of the 2D/3D laboratory infrastructure (hardware and software).
  • Interaction and contribution to the research work of the interdisciplinary team of APAC Labs in STARC and CyI.
  • Development of autonomous research, aligned with the APAC Labs research agenda and CyI.
  • Contribution in the preparation of deliverables and activity reports for externally funded projects.
  • Submission of research proposals for external grants.
  • Supervision and mentoring of research assistants and technical specialists.
  • Contribution in the academic activities of STARC.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • PhD relevant to Digital/ICT Technologies for Cultural Heritage
  • Preferred specialization in 2D/3D Digital Heritage and/or Photogrammetry and sensors integration and/or 3D Visualization will be considered a competitive advantage
  • At least three (3) years of research experience, following PhD studies
  • Proven ability to write scientific papers
  • Proven ability to present scientific results at conferences
  • Proven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary research team
  • Knowledge of 3D data repositories
  • Learning environments based on virtual and augmented reality
  • Solid background in photogrammetry, range sensors, 3D survey, technical photography and sensor integration;
  • 2D/ 3D Cultural Heritage multi-platform field survey and post processing;
  • 3D visualization and geometry analysis of heritage assets;
  • 3D web visualization and development of 3D data knowledge repositories;
  • Virtual refitting of fragments (2D and 3D);
  • Knowledge in 3D virtual research environments;
  • Multispectral Imaging and Change Detection analysis;
  • Knowledge in programming skills (html, java).
  • Proven ability to collaborate in international teams
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language.
