The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a rapidly grown facility developed in the framework of the “Autonomous Flying Platforms for Atmospheric and Earth Surface Observation” Project (APAESO). The facility is comprised of various sizes of fixed and rotary wing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs), a mobile Ground Control Station and a fully equipped laboratory and workshop dedicated to Unmanned Systems and their Applications. After a period of research and prototyping in the field of UAS, the USRL is looking into further growth with emphasis into commercialization of its products and services. In order to assist accomplishing this new target, the Cyprus Institute is seeking for an experienced software developer to join the highly competitive USRL team. As part of her/his appointment, s/he will be responsible for the improvement of current UAS in terms of automation and user-interface friendliness as well as contributing in the development of new UAS for customized applications.

The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a fixed-term period, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.


  • Design and development of software related to UAS.
  • Programming of UAS hardware such as flight controllers, data acquisition systems, telecommunication systems.
  • Understanding existing code, providing improvements/extending functionality of flight controllers and related hardware modules/applications
  • Code development for Interfacing payload and avionics (communication, data handling)
  • Programming development for improving automation and safety of flights
  • Development of user-interfaces to support mission-specific capabilities.
  • Rewriting prototype systems to more commercialized and user friendly solutions
  • Contributing in the overall development of the UAS (Platform and Ground Control Station).
  • Participation in scheduled Test Flights for the purpose of the development and optimization of the platforms and the avionic/navigation systems.
  • Supporting in troubleshooting and diagnosis of UAS components
  • Participates in field deployment (including research campaigns) and demonstrations of UAVs.
  • Remains current on UAS software and associated technology and makes appropriate recommendations to the team leader.
    • Ensures compliance with service guidance, Institute’s policy and procedures and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Master Degree in in Computer Science and/or Degree or MSc in Computer Engineering and/or Degree or MSc in Software Engineering
  • C/C++/C#/Java Programming Skills
  • Hardware programming and low level interface
  • Basic understanding of analog and digital electronic circuits
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural, multinational environment
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language both verbal and in writing. Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in UAV Flight operations
