The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

STARC is devoted to the development, introduction and use of advanced science and technologies in the field of archaeological sciences, cultural heritage, history and culture of the region.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for identifying funding opportunities, coordinating and supporting the acquisition and implementation of research projects across the full range of activities of STARC, including contributing to grant writing and budget preparation, and leading the submission, negotiation and eventually management of projects. The role holder will be leading the annual budget process for STARC in consultation with the Center’s Director and faculty and senior CyI administrative staff, tracking and optimizing expenses and activities, and regular reporting. An important element is supporting the Director in the strategic development of the project portfolio, core-funded activities, the research agenda of the Research Center, and the regular reporting to the Center’s advisory and expert panels. The successful candidate is expected to drive project implementation and communication with internal and external partners with minimal guidance, to contribute regularly to the activities of the Institute’s central research office, and to provide guidance and supervision of the Center’s Administrator.

The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a fixed-term period, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.


The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities

  • Identification of research and funding opportunities
  • Supporting STARC Faculty in grant preparation, incl. drafting, writing and budgeting
  • Negotiating and managing STARC projects
  • Oversight of research project implementation (from various funding sources including EU (H2020 and others), Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation (RPF), and charitable funding)
  • Project administration/coordination (financial reporting, deliverables, communication with funding organisations)
  • Participation in the planning and coordination of the Center’s activities, including the annual budget process and reporting to internal and external advisory bodies (SEP, SAC)

Liaising with the CyI’s Research and Innovation Management and Support (RIMS) Office and the coordinators of the other Centers to optimize processes and share experiences

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications and Attributes

  • MA/MSc in one of the fields broadly related to the activities of STARC
  • At least five (5) years of experience in grant writing, project management, research development or similar activities
  • Excellent understanding of EU and national policy goals in relation to research and innovation
  • Experience in monitoring work programs and identifying appropriate strategic funding opportunities
  • Experience in identifying and monitoring all relevant calls for proposals
  • Proven experience in financial reporting for funded projects
  • Experience in presenting to various audiences
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and in writing
  • Proactive, creative, independently-thinking person with keen interest for promoting science and technology in the humanities and historical sciences
  • Highly motivated, with the ability to work independently
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural, multinational environment
  • Interest in archaeology, history and cultural heritage

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent knowledge of project management software and office IT tools
  • A project management qualification
  • Experience of writing proposals for the H2020 research funding programme
  • Experience of managing complex EU-funded research projects
  • Knowledge of the Greek language would be a major advantage
  • PhD degree in a cognate field relevant for STARC activities
