Job Description

The Institute aims to develop a vibrant Innovation Office at CyI which will facilitate collaborations, parterships, industrial interactions and knowledge transfer. It is desired to be developed as the key source enabling the Institute to increase research impact through collaboration, knowledge transfer activities and commercialization of Intellectual Property.

 

Reporting to the President of the Cyprus Institute the Head of the newly established Innovation Office of CyI will be responsible for the strategic advancement and implementation of the innovation activities of the Institute. The Head will provide leadership for all innovation related activities and manage the staff of the unit. S/he will provide a clear vision for the office and ensure the delivery of high-quality professional support that will realize the CyI’s priorities and long-term ambitions in the field of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to set up and establish the Innovation office and develop all relevant policies and procedures.

 

The person appointed must be able to identify and evaluate new opportunities for external funding and IP exploitation, and guide and support academic staff in taking advantage of these. The ability to maintain and develop relationships with councils, government departments and agencies in Cyprus and the EU, industrial partners and other major national and international funders is also essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and promote the CyI innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem at CyI through team building with external entities (external funds, potential licensees) while promoting CyI activities to postdocs, grad students and faculty
  • Provide overall leadership for CyI's intellectual property and licensing strategy, organization and procedures.
  • Take a lead role in developing innovative mechanisms for maximizing returns to CyI, in support of its public mission
  • Overseeing the delivery of high-quality support to the CyI community for project management in commercialization, innovation, exploitation and enterprise (including Knowledge Transfer Partnerships)
  • Secure continuation funding to support the work of the Innovation Office and seeking new income streams to offset the costs of the office
  • Promote external engagement, enterprise and innovation
  • Oversee activities relating to licensing, joint ventures, start-ups and spin-out companies

 

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experiences/training.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience as an executive with in private industry or academia or a combination of the two

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification is desirable (STEM field)
  • Substantial experience at senior level in a research focused higher education institution is desirable
  • A demonstrable record of managing and developing an institutional innovation portfolio
  • Experience of negotiating complex financial and contractual issues including Intellectual Property management
  • Proven strong negotiating skills
  • Demonstrated skills in employee supervision
  • Expert level English verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills. Knowledge of other languages, especially Greek will be an asset.
