Technical Research Specialist in Atmospheric sciences (ref.no. EMME-CARE_TRS_19_01)

Reference Number
EMME-CARE_TRS_19_01
Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research, innovation, and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The Project

The Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East (EMME) region is a climate change hotspot characterized by high concentrations of air pollution and windblown desert dust, which are expected to increase in the near future. The Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO; http://www.cyi.ac.cy/index.php/cao.html ) has been established by the Cyprus Institute in 2015 with the objective to establish long-term (multi-year) high quality atmospheric observations representative of the EMME and better document regional air pollution and climate change (current levels and future trends).

The CAO is currently part of ACTRIS, AERONET, WMO (GAW), TCCON and EMEP international networks and is attracting high calibre scientists from several European institutions conducting research on ambient gas and aerosol science and technology. The CAO gathers the latest generation of scientific instrumentation for online monitoring of aerosol properties, reactive gases and greenhouse gases species following international standardized operating procedures.

This position is opened in the framework of the EU H2020 project “EMME-CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre; TEAMING Grant no. 856612; http://emme-care.cyi.ac.cy/). EMME-CARE aims to establish a “Centre of Excellence” in Climate and Atmosphere research for the EMME region in cooperation with EU Advanced Partners (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany; University of Helsinki in Finland; and CEA in France).

The Position

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for a Technical Research Specialist position (with a full-time appointment) to support the long-term development and operation of CAO. The successful candidate will be a member of the Atmosphere and Climate Division of the Cyprus Institute (http://acd.cyi.ac.cy) composed by international profile scientists and technical experts, working in a highly attractive and international environment (English is the formal working language at the CyI). S/he will be responsible for the routine operation, control, calibration, and scheduled maintenance of scientific instrumentation following international Standard Operation Procedures.

The selected candidate will be supported in his tasks by international experts from LSCE (CNRS-CEA, France) and University of Helsinki (Finland) that are the institutions supporting the Cyprus Institute in the establishment of long-term atmospheric observations at the CAO.

S/he will also support research programs with environmental/atmospheric applications at the Cyprus Institute (field campaigns in Cyprus and abroad) as well as technical developments in collaboration with other CyI research facilities developing miniaturized atmospheric sensors of drone applications.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities

  • Responsible for the daily operation of CAO (maintenance, calibration, international intercomparison studies) following international standard operating procedures;
  • Weekly visit to the monitoring stations in Cyprus.
  • Quality assurance and quality control of atmospheric data and submission to international atmospheric database;
  • Logistics support to the Research Infrastructure Unit of EMME-CARE (consumables, stock, inventory);
  • Support of research activities within the Research Infrastructure Unit of EMME-CARE (e.g TCCON station, drone and atmospheric sensor laboratories); and
  • Participating in the field intensive campaigns of EMME-CARE (Cyprus and abroad).
