Job Description

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research and postgraduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.

The Lab assistant would be working closely with Ass Profs Margaritis and Nikita in handling both archaeobotanical and osteoachaeological material. She/he will be involved in sample processing and preparation for study and also in the digital documentation of plant and human remains.

The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a fixed-term period, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.


The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities:

  • Assist in archaeobotanical work in the field by conducting flotation;
  • Basic sorting of residues in the laboratory;
  • Sorting of plant macro-remains;
  • Digitization and organization of the reference collection of seeds using digital photography and 3D surface scanning;
  • Preparation of samples for the extraction of phytoliths and starches;
  • Digitization of human skeletal remains from Cypriot archaeological sites for the creation of digital reference collection;
  • Preparation of dental casts for microwear analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • A Master degree in Bioarchaeology/Environmental Archaeology;
  • Work in various excavations;
  • Archaeobotanical sample processing and preparation;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural, multinational environment;
  • High level organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language both verbal and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic skills in digitalization
